Volunteer

Most Communities In Schools volunteer opportunities are located on a school campus. Volunteers are matched based on interest with a student or groups of students during the school year, beginning in the fall and continuing until the end of the school year. To become a Communities In Schools of Jacksonville volunteer, please first complete the CIS Volunteer Form!

SmartKids
Our afterschool program is on-site at 35 elementary and middle schools throughout Jacksonville. Volunteers are needed to work with elementary and middle school students in a lively, fun and enriching afterschool environment. Volunteers can come out once, weekly or even a monthly basis. Volunteers engage students in academic support, activities, and serve as positive role models. We welcome volunteers to sign up via volunteer@cisjax.org

– Elementary Afterschool program runs from 3pm-6pm Monday-Friday and Middle School Afterschool Program runs from 4pm-7pm Monday-Friday

Reading Buddies
Students who are behind in reading levels by third grade are more likely to drop out of school before graduating. Reading Buddies volunteers, come into one of our 13 elementary schools once a month and provide extra support and encouragement to students by reading to a group during morning academics. We welcome volunteers to sign up via volunteer@cisjax.org

Career & Success Coach 
Support students by helping them get ready for the next steps after high school. Career & Success Coaches work with students once a month on college and career preparation including speaking with students about careers, resume building, mock interviews, assisting with filling out job or college applications and connecting with students to help them prepare for life after high school.We welcome volunteers to sign up via volunteer@cisjax.org

Pizza with a Professional

This volunteer experience includes speaking with high school students about education, careers and college. Volunteers are welcome to bring a presentation or come and talk with the students in an open conversation. This takes place during the students 30 minute lunch period. We will provide the pizza and drinks for you and the students to enjoy! This is a once a month volunteer opportunity. For details please email volunteer@cisjax.org

Popcorn with a Professional
This volunteer experience includes speaking with elementary or middle school students about education, careers and college. Volunteers are welcome to bring a presentation or come and talk with the students in an open conversation. We will provide the popcorn and drinks for you and the students to enjoy! This opportunity takes place monthly on early release days and is an hour long. Volunteers can speak for as long or as short as they would like and are encouraged to bring a PowerPoint or handouts to encourage student engagement. For details please email volunteer@cisjax.org

Organize a Drive for Students In Need
Work with friends, co-workers, or an organization to collect items for students in need. If you are interesting in a drive, please contact us at volunteer@cisjax.org and we would be happy to work with you on creating a flyer or other materials as needed. The most needed items are: 

  • Sock, underwear, belt drive
  • Hygiene kit drive & assembly
  • School supplies
  • Books (new or gently used)
  • Gift card drive
  • Comfort kit drive and assembly
