Communities In Schools of Jacksonville (CIS Jax) celebrated its 35th Anniversary on Jan. 31 with a Walk In Their Shoes Gala at Deerwood Castle, the former Lamborghini North America headquarters. The event raised over $100,000, directly funding ongoing initiatives in literacy, case management, afterschool programs, and workforce development. Over the last three and a half decades, CIS Jax has made a lasting difference in Duval County, enriching the lives of more than 111,000 students.
The event, presented by Nimnicht Family of Dealerships, featured powerful videos showcasing its impact, including stories from a principal, a student, and a family. The evening also featured an exciting live art auction led by the renowned speed painter Evan Struck. His dynamic creations captivated the audience, including stunning pieces such as the Jaguars mascot, the iconic Jacksonville skyline, and a luxury car—fittingly, a vehicle that resides at the Deerwood Castle.
The Announcement
However, the highlight of the evening was the launch of The Leon Baxton Legacy Fund—an endowment established to provide reliable, long-term support. The fund, named after CEO Leon Baxton, who has served with the organization for 33 of its 35 years, will ensure:
Innovation: Investing in new initiatives.
Enhanced Services: Expanding programs and reach.
Sustainability: Shaping the future of CIS Jax.
This $3.5 million fundraising campaign will be managed by The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida and be strategically invested to accomplish desired returns.
CIS Jax’s Chief Development Officer, Erin Mangan, states that there’s no more fitting choice to honor the campaign than Leon Baxton. “He is the heartbeat of what Communities In Schools does every day,” she said.
Baxton, who grew up facing challenges similar to those served by CIS Jax, shared his strong commitment to helping others overcome obstacles and stay in school. He encouraged the audience to get more involved by volunteering, donating, and inspiring others to make a difference. “When CIS Jax and the community unite, we change lives,” he said.
