Literacy

There is a vital need for students to successfully read and comprehend at an early age. Our literacy program, Duval Reads, provides intensive one-on-one and small group reading tutoring to students in kindergarten through the ninth grade. The program’s goal is to increase students’ reading comprehension by at least one letter grade. Our tutors work in the schools on a full-time and part-time basis with their assigned students.

Major funding for Duval Reads is provided through Volunteer Florida from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Significant matching funds are provided locally by The Coach Foundation, The Lucy Gooding Charitable Foundation Trust, Duval County Public Schools, The Player Champions Red Coats Committee, Publix Super Market Charities, BAE Systems, Nordstrom Cares, BBVA Compass, The Chartrand Advised Fund and the Edna Sproull Williams Foundation.

Duval Reads has been working in Duval County Public Schools since 1999 and has helped more than 7,500 students achieve their reading goals.

The DREAM Project (Duval Reads Engaging America’s Military) is an initiative under the Literacy Division that focuses on involving active duty military and veterans as volunteer mentors and tutors for military dependent students. This bold initiative has a two-fold purpose: 1. to focus on improving the overall lives of our military youth through providing assistance in literacy and mentoring 2. to connect the additional military community with opportunities to improve the city of Jacksonville and surrounding areas through service.

“When I used to have trouble reading, it was boring, frustrating and aggravating. My Americorps tutor helped me understand the words and their meanings. Now, I want to be a writer or an editor when I grow up.”
